Deweys Tourney hopes to bring the Walker community together through hockey
Dewayne Lesetmoe, known to his friends as 'Dewey', was a Walker native born in 1955, and had a very strong passion for hockey, so much so that every year for over 20 years, as soon as the weather was cold enough, he set up his own hockey club. to have its own ice rink and to hold a hockey tournament, later known as Dewey's Tourney, with all locals who wanted to participate. When Dewey passed away in 2022, those who grew up playing the Dewey tournament wanted to keep the tradition alive.
This year the tournament will take place on Saturday, December 28. The Walker Area Community Center has been home to the tournament for the past two years, and things only get better as the years go by. Community donations made it possible to install dasher boards and rink shields for Dewey's Outdoor Rink, but just as Dewey and his son John would do, committee members are busy preparing the rink before the tournament begins.
“He is a man who deserves a legacy that continues to be spread,” emphasized Dewey's Tourney Committee member Taylor Knight. “Dewey and his son John were just selfless with their time and gave everything they had to be able to create a wonderful, safe place for everyone to come, both youth and adults. Their spirit was just selfless and they undoubtedly gave their time to provide a safe place for people to hang out, learn hockey and skate.”
In addition to the all-day hockey games, the event will also feature a free lunch for the community, along with something organizers are calling a Christmas skate. Both Deweys Outdoor Rink and the indoor rink at the Community Center will host games throughout the day.
But even with the silt and melting ice, those who grew up playing at Dewey's Tourney will still play on its outdoor court.
“You know, we were thinking about just doing it all indoors,” said Dewey tournament committee member Cole Garoutte, “but in the spirit of Dewey and when the rink used to be on the hill and this was our only option, we played outside regardless of the weather conditions, so we're going to make the most of it and get a little wet and see what happens.
Participation in the event is free and more information can be found at the tournament's Facebook page. Registration begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and the first puck drop is at 11 a.m.
