Iowa State Football earns a win in Pop-Tarts Bowl over Miami
ORLANDO The Pop-Tarts Bowl got the absurdity it deserved.
A match that embraced hilarity and madness off the field had plenty of it between the lines on Saturday.
A fumble on the first photo of the day. Eight consecutive touchdown drives. A potential No. 1 overall pick calling it a career at halftime. A game-winning drive that kicked off with a fourth-down touchdown in the final minute.
Who needs a sacrificial Pop-Tart or a toaster trophy when you've got all that?
Sure, the game felt like a Saturday morning pickup game at times, and like a glorified scrimmage at other times. But for a lot of the time it was certainly a lot of fun.

Once upon a time, bowl games were the coda to one season or the springboard to the next, but No. 19 Iowa State's 42-41 victory over No. 16 Miami felt like neither.
It was a standalone 60 minutes that won't change much of what we thought about the Iowa States 2024 campaign or how we think about what will happen in 2025.
It's probably foolhardy to take this game too seriously, and not because a person in a pastry costume is lowered into a giant toaster to meet their performative demise.
No, there are many more reasons. Like Iowa State with two players in top pick Jayden Higgins and starting cornerback Darien Porter just warming up to not play, presumably as opt-outs with both possessing an NFL future. The real coup de grace, however, was Miami quarterback Cam Ward, Heisman Trophy finalist and potential No. 1 overall NFL draft pick, who played brilliantly in the first half and then sat out the second half, presumably as an opt-out.
What are you actually supposed to do with a game like that?
You can't draw conclusions about which team, at full strength or what passes for after a full regular season, is better. The scoreboard tells a story, but not a complete story.
You can't even really get mad at the players. They have real money on the line, and college football has devalued the postseason outside of the playoffs so much that it's hard to ask them to care, while the sport itself hardly does.
Just look at Beau Freyler. The Iowa State safety and captain has endured pain and injuries throughout his career. He decided to play for the in one last match Cyclonesand instead of walking off the field one last time, he had to be wheeled back to the locker room after a leg injury.
This is a violent sport and the risk is real for players on the cusp of life-changing NFL contracts.
So, what should we do with a game like this?

Enjoy it for what it is, I guess.
The first half of this match was absolutely crazy. It was played with the same energy as a toddler eating too many of the very sweetest Pop-Tarts. It was incredibly fun as the two teams traded touchdowns for almost two hours.
The sugar high largely wore off in the second half, but Rocco Bechts' quarterback sneak to victory won't soon be forgotten by Cyclone fans. The Cyclones' eleven wins cap off the season and also set a new bar for the program.
The Pop-Tarts Bowl has become a viral sensation and something of a cult classic for college football sick people because they embrace the reality of the situation. He knows it's not the grandpa, and doesn't pretend to be. It's the crazy Pop-Tarts Bowl. The name itself is stupid, and the antics surrounding the game match.
It's okay to admit that a game is a game and not much more.
Something doesn't have to have weight, commitment or meaning to be fun. To be enjoyable. To be memorable.
The Pop-Tarts Bowl understood the assignment, and the Cyclones and Hurricanes did their part.
It may not have any major consequences, but the game was a lot of fun. That's exactly what it was supposed to be.
