Felix Lebrunthe newest phenomenon in the world of table tennis, is the best player from his illustrious family, which is quite an achievement considering his older brother Alexis is also one of the stars of the sport. In 2023, Felix surpassed Alexis in the world rankings and entered the the world's top 10 at just 17 years old.
“Are we rivals? No, we're kicking each other's ass; we're both trying to make as much progress as possible, pulling each other up, giving each other advice to go as far as possible. I'm glad I passed him (on the world ranking), but for now I have never beaten him in an official match,” the youngest Lebrun shared on French radio RMC, dismissing any idea of bitter rivalry with his sibling.
Felix comes from a family deeply rooted in table tennis. His brother Alexis, three years older, is a mainstay of the world top 30 and a decorated national and European champion. Both brothers were introduced to table tennis at a young age, which is no surprise given their family's table tennis heritage.
Their father, Stphane, achieved a career national ranking of seventh, while their uncle, Christophe Legot, represented France at three Olympic Games (1996, 2000 and 2008).
Felix started his journey in the sport with multiple youth titles, claiming French titles at both cadet and junior levels.
Felix Lebrun: Ascension to European glory and top-10 ranking
Felix continued his success at senior competitions. In 2022, he won the French doubles championship and reached the men's doubles semi-finals at the European Championships with his brother Alexis, earning him his first continental bronze medal.
The momentum continued in 2023 when Felix finished second in singles to his brother at the French Championships. He later won his first individual title at the European Games in Krakow, beating Portugal's Marcos Freitas in the final.
After his individual victory, Felix won another bronze medal at the European Championships in the team event, along with his brother Alexis and other French players. The brothers continued their winning streak at the WTT Star Contender de Lanzhou, where they claimed their first international doubles title as a pair.
Felix Lebrun: Success that belies his age
The French star reached new heights at the WTT Contender Antalya, winning his first title on the WTT circuit by beating German Dimitrij Ovtcharov in a thrilling final. The win moved him into the top 10 in the world, the third youngest player to reach this ranking.
The French prodigy, who is only 17 when the Paris 2024 is rolling around, has his sights set on lofty dreams: winning a medal at the Olympic Games in his own country. France last won a table tennis medal in Sydney 2000, thanks to the doubles bronze of Jean-Philippe Gatien and Patrick Chila.
And why not double down with a win alongside his brother?
“Doing the Games in your country is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It's in the back of my mind, but first and foremost I'm thinking about progress and climbing the world rankings to be able to go to Paris with the most confidence come.” he said.
“We don't talk about it too much with my brother; it's far away and there have been many competitions. Participating in the Games together, if possible towards the end of the tournament, would be exceptional. It's a dream. ” We couldn't do better.”
