Penn State's James Franklin says Nick Saban should become college football commissioner
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Penn State coach James Franklin believes college football needs a commissioner and he even has a candidate in mind: former Alabama coach Nick Saban.
I guess he's the obvious choice, right? Franklin said.
Franklin, who joked that Saban would not be happy with his comment, made the suggestion Sunday at Penn States College Football Playoff Quarterfinals media day prior to the Fiesta Bowl. The sixth-seeded Nittany Lions prepare for their game against No. 3 seed Boise State on Tuesday.
The veteran coach was responding to a question about Penn States' backup quarterback situation after Beau Pribula was transferred to Missouri just weeks before the CFP began, leaving the Nittany Lions scrambling for options. Pribula's decision highlighted some of the frustrating aspects of a new college football world in the era of Name, Image and Likeness and the transfer portal, which forced players to make tough decisions at inopportune times.
Franklin said that because there is no leader solely concerned with college football, the conference commissioners must handle the task themselves. That has led to bickering between the leagues as different conferences have different interests.
“I think one of the most important things we can do is appoint a college football commissioner who gets up every morning and goes to bed every night and makes decisions that are in the best interest of college football,” Franklin said.
The 73-year-old Saban retired after last season as perhaps the most successful college football coach of all time. He won seven national titles, including six at Alabama and one at LSU. That's him now an analyst for ESPN's College GameDay.
