Tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski reveals she played Wimbledon and the Olympics while battling breast cancer
Canadian tennis star Gabriela Dabrowski revealed in a social media post in April 2024 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Dabrowski, 32, said she had slightly delayed some of her treatment to complete Wimbledon and the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“In the spring of 2023, during a self-exam, I felt a lump in my left breast. A few months later, a doctor said it was nothing and that I didn't have to worry. So I didn't. Time passed and in the spring of 2024 I thought the lump was a little bigger,” Dabrowski wrote on Instagram.

“During our extensive WTA exams, a WTA doctor told me she wasn't sure what it was, and that she should have it scanned. A call from the radiologist who read the images and alerted me to a lump that did not look like a cyst seemed ugly because of the uneven edges and shadows and I want you to get a biopsy immediately.'
“The next morning I went to Advent Health Hospital at Wesley Chapel and had a biopsy of my left breast. The preliminary results came back that day: cancer. These are words you never expect to hear, and in the blink of an eye your life or a loved one's life is turned upside down.”
Dabrowski said she is choosing to share her story now because for a long time she “wasn't ready to expose myself to the potential attention and questions I had received before.”
The star tennis player wanted to 'sort everything out and handle things privately'.
“Fast forward through 2 surgeries at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, recovery, rehab, @patrickdaciek threw the ball on my serve because my left arm couldn't raise high enough (this was 2 weeks before Nottingham) slight delay in further treatment to be able to competing at Wimbledon and the Olympics, radiation + fatigue (between Toronto and US Open), and starting endocrine therapy, ending the season on the highest possible note, it all seems surreal.”

Despite battling breast cancer, Dabrowski not only competed in Wimbledon and the Olympics, but also had great success.
Dabrowski and her doubles partner Erin Routliffe lost in the Wimbledon final and at the Paris Olympics she won a bronze medal in mixed doubles for Canada.
“My intentions in sharing some of my experiences are to highlight the quality of life you can maintain if cancer is detected early, if you have access to physicians and other healthcare providers who are highly skilled and dedicated to their profession, if you take care of your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being, and when you surround yourself with people who truly have your back (and your front),” Dabrowski wrote.
“Early in my diagnosis, I was afraid that cancer would become part of my identity forever. I no longer have that feeling. It is a privilege to call myself a survivor.”
Dabrowski said her diagnosis gave her the opportunity to see challenges through a different lens, “a lens of gratitude.”

She ended her post with the words: “To cancer I say f— you, but also: thank you.”
Dabrowski won three doubles titles in 2024 and has won 17 doubles titles in her career.
Dabrowski is also a three-time Olympian, competing in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
