Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff qualify the US for quarters of the United Cup
PERTH, Australia – The top-ranked couple Coco Gauff and US Open finalist Taylor Fritz from the United States participate in the mixed tennis quarter-finals of the United Cup.
Frits hit Borna Coric 6-3, 6-2 Tuesday, as the American team only needed to win one match to beat Group A. For good measure, Gauff defeated Donna Vekic 6-4, 6-2 in the later women's singles.
The world number 3 lost to Vekic at the Olympic Games in Paris, but Bencic was no match for Gauff on Tuesday.
“Really happy with how I played today,” Gauff said. “She's a great player. Losing at the Olympics hurt, so I definitely thought about it as motivation to do better and I'm happy to send my team through.”
The US defeated Canada in their opening match.
The Perth quarter-finals were scheduled for Wednesday, with the US pitted against top runner-up China, and group winners Kazakhstan and Germany playing each other.
In Sydney, Italy also reached the quarter-finals on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over France at the Ken Rosewall Arena. Flavio Cobolli claimed a 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-2 singles victory over France Ugo Humbert. Jasmine Paolini beat Chloe Paquet 6-0, 6-2 to give Italy the winning margin before also winning the mixed doubles.
Winners of the past two Davis Cups and runners-up two years ago in the US in the first edition of the season-opening mixed teams event, Italy won Group D without world No. 1 Jannik Sinner after also beating Switzerland 2–0 in their opening match.
