Alexander Zverev was injured as Holders Germany crashed out of the United Cup
Elena Rybakina's Kazakhstan dumped defending champion Germany out of the United Cup on Wednesday, while world number two Alexander Zverev was sidelined with an arm injury just a week away from the Australian Open. The unrest in Perth sent the Kazakhs to the semi-finals of the 18-nation tournament. In the women's world number two match in Sydney, Iga Swiatek led Poland to the last eight by winning a rematch of her 2023 French Open final against Czech Karolina Muchova. Great Britain also reached the quarter-finals with Katie Boulter's dominant 6-2, 6-1 win over Australia's Olivia Gadecki, enough to guarantee they won their group.
Sixth-ranked Rybakina earned the first point for Kazakhstan, with the 2022 Wimbledon champion beating Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-1.
Zverev then withdrew from his match against Alexander Shevchenko at the last minute with a biceps strain, leaving 254th-ranked Daniel Masur to face him.
He fought bravely, but Shevchenko was too strong and made it 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-2 despite a medical timeout in the second set, complaining of breathing difficulties.
“I was struggling in this heat, it was so tough,” said the world number 78, who upset Stefanos Tsitsipas in group play on Monday.
“I had a headache and my head was spinning. But I wanted to win this one.
“After (losing) the first set I knew I had to shorten the rallies and play aggressively, tee off on the ball. I just kept pushing after the first set and I'm very happy with it.”
Five-time Grand Slam winner Swiatek scored a victory over Muchova to come out on top 6-3, 6-4 after teammate Hubert Hurkacz was upset by Tomas Machac in three sets.
Swiatek returned to partner Hurkacz and outlasted Muchova and Machac in the decisive mixed doubles match 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 to keep their tournament alive.
Swiatek played her first event since it was announced at the end of November that she had served a one-month ban for a doping violation. Swiatek dropped serve and fell behind 2-1 in the first set against Muchova.
But she won the next three matches to reassert control and finished the match comfortably.
“Honestly, I like playing against Karolina because she always brings precision and intensity and a little bit of a different game than most girls,” Swiatek said.
“So it's definitely a challenge. I'm happy that even though I lost my serve when I thought it would get easier, I'm happy that in the last two matches I've increased my intensity even more to break again.”
Swiatek and Muchova had played three times before and each played three sets, with the Pole winning two, including her memorable triumph at Roland Garros.
Boulter dominated Gadecki from the start, showing more consistency and depth from the baseline. He needed just 70 minutes to secure the victory.
“I'm so happy to get through this rubber, I'm not going to lie,” she said.
Her Australian fiancé Alex de Minaur crushed Billy Harris 6-2, 6-1 in the men's singles, but it was in vain as Great Britain was already through.
