United Cup: Katie Boulter leads Great Britain to quarter-final
Katie Boulter defeated Australia's Olivia Gadecki in straight sets to ensure Great Britain reached the quarter-finals of the United Cup in Sydney.
Boulter knew that an outright win of any of the three rubbers against the hosts would see GB emerge as winners of Group F.
In the first match of the tie, Boulter won 6-2 6-1 inside 70 minutes to secure qualification before Australia won the next two meetings.
Boulter's fiancée Alex de Minaur defeated GB's Billy Harris 6-2 6-1 before joining Gadecki in the mixed doubles to beat Charles Broom and Olivia Nicholls 6-3 7-6 (7-3) .
Great Britain had defeated Argentina 2-1 in their opening match at the event on Tuesday and while all three teams in the group finished on the same points, GB finished in first place having won the most sets.
“I've been trying to avoid all the statistics about all this, but we were eating [former British number one] Laura Robson last night, and she gratefully told me I had to win in straight sets,” Boulter said.
“So I felt the pressure from last night.”
Alexander Shevchenko helped Kazakhstan reach the quarter-finals by eliminating defending champion Germany, who were without world number two Alexander Zverev due to a biceps injury.
Poland also qualified, with Iga Swiatek beating Czech Karolina Muchova.
