Australian cricket veteran Glenn Maxwell has taken what some people are calling the best ever catch Down Under.

The 36-year-old stunned viewers on Wednesday night when he dismissed Brisbane's Jack Prestwidge during the Melbourne Stars' Big Bash League victory at the Gabba.

Prestwidge was on 4 when he hit a shot towards the boundary and it looked certain it would go for six.

But Maxwell jumped off the ground and somehow caught the ball with his right hand, threw it back into the field before landing, and then climbed back over the rope to complete the catch.

Maxwell is known for being erratic on the pitch and he was relatively restrained after this epic performance, but the commentators were left stunned.

“Unbelievable. We've seen incredible things this summer but that's the catch of the year,” said Mark Howard on Fox Cricket.

“Maxwell, like Lebron James, flies through the air, throws it back and takes something that only Glenn Maxwell could do.

“I don't think I've ever seen a better catch than this.”

England cricket great Michael Vaughan could hardly believe his eyes.

“That's genius, it really is,” he said.

Many viewers claimed that this was perhaps the best ever catch in the BBL.

Maxwell was generally reluctant to sing his own praises when speaking about it afterwards.

“It's something I practice quite a bit,” he said.

“I'm probably not the person to judge (whether it's the best ever) – Jordan Silk has made a lot of good catches, and (Ben Duckett's) was pretty good the other day.”
