Pakistani tennis prodigy Mikaeel Baig is taking pickleball by storm
Lahore – Mikaeel Ali Baig, a 15-year-old tennis prodigy from Pakistan, is earning praise not only on the tennis court but also in the fast-growing sport of pickleball. Known for his remarkable achievements in tennis, including six national championships in Pakistan, multiple Asian Tennis Federation titles, international wins in the US and representing Pakistan in the Junior Davis Cup, Mikaeel now has another feather in his cap cap by excelling at pickleball. Most recently, Mikaeel emerged victorious at the Pickleball Pro Junior Championship in Daytona, Florida, a prestigious event featuring more than 1,200 players from around the world. His outstanding performances earned him a coveted DUPR rating of 5, placing him among the top 20 pickleball players under 18 worldwide – a remarkable achievement for someone who has only recently embraced the sport. “Pickleball is an exciting mix of tennis, badminton, table tennis and padel,” says Mikaeel. “It's a fast-paced game that requires quick footwork, lower body strength and strategic thinking. While some see pickleball as a potential distraction for tennis players, Mikaeel sees it as a supplement. “My multi-sport background, including taekwondo and gymnastics, has significantly improved my tennis game. “Many top tennis players, such as Jack Sock and Andre Agassi, now compete in pickleball. Even legends like Ivan Lendl are involved in it; he played on a field next to mine during the tournament. It is a great way to develop skills, but my primary focus remains tennis,” he added. In addition to his personal success, Mikaeel and his family are passionate about introducing pickleball to Pakistan. Working with his mother, Ayesha, he plans to meet Pakistan Tennis Federation President Aisam Ul Haq to explore the possibilities for growing the sport in the country.
They are also working to establish pickleball courts in cities such as Multan, with possible support from local companies such as the Bodla Group and international pickleball organizations.
