Lane Kiffin prediction for 2025 and beyond
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. When Lane Kiffin addressed the future Thursday night, it wasn't a big round of applause or a hopeful wish. He spoke businesslike.
“We're just getting started,” Kiffin said.
During Ole Miss' on-field celebration following a 52-20 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl victory against Duke (9-4), the Rebels' football coach said it as if he could see into the future.
Kiffin's statement may become reality. Maybe not. Either way, he's set a strong starting point.
With the victory, Ole ma'am finished 10-3. It's the second straight 10-win season for the Rebels, last coming in 1959-60. Ole ma'am has won 39 games in Kiffin's four non-COVID seasons. In the four years before Kiffin, the Rebels won 20 games.
Talent will largely leave Ole Miss' roster. Quarterback Jaxson Dart, Ole Miss' all-time scoring leader, is no longer eligible. Defensive linemen Walter Nolen, Princely Umanmielen and defensive back Trey Amos are all included as early-round selections in the NFL Draft. There are others too.
As for the future, that doesn't bother Kiffin. He has seen cycles where critical players left.
“I probably wouldn't have been as confident (saying Ole Miss is just getting started) if we hadn't done this before,” Kiffin said. “I feel like when (quarterback) Matt Corral left, I felt like a lot of people thought we were going to have this downturn and that was just a Matt Corral thing.”
Corral left Ole Miss after 2021. In 2022, Kiffin brought in Dart.
Ole Miss football has the No. 3 transfer portal class according to 247Sports. Redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Simmons appears poised to keep Ole Miss' offense going in 2025. Kiffin seemed optimistic about retaining defensive coordinator Pete Golding and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr.
“My point is that we can continue to get better by continuing to add players and pieces and keeping our staff together, which has been very crucial,” Kiffin said.
