Northern Illinois will vote on the football-only Mountain West invitational on Tuesday
The Northern Illinois Board of Directors will meet Tuesday to discuss and vote on whether to accept an invitation to join the Mountain West as a football-only member in 2026.
People familiar with the situation reported it The Athletics that while they expect the vote on approving the $2 million membership fee to proceed, they warned it is not a done deal until that approval occurs. The university has recommended to the board to approve the move.
The move would see the Huskies football team leave the MAC, with the landing spot for the other sports still to be determined, and give the Mountain West a total of 11 members and nine football playing members by 2026.
The conference is scheduled to lose Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State to the rebuilding Pac-12 in 2026, but it will add UTEP as an all-sports member and change Hawaii from a football member . to a full-time member and add Grand Canyon and UC Davis as full non-football members.
After the Pac-12 defections in September, the Mountain West tried to prevent UNLV and Air Force from leaving, giving them heavy financial incentives to stay in the league. After promising to stay, the conference went on the offensive to increase its numbers. FBS rules required the league to have eight full football members by 2028 to maintain conference recognition.
Mountain Wests football members include Air Force, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Northern Illinois, San Jose State, UNLV, UTEP and Wyoming.
This would not be the first time that NIU has participated in a conference in the West. The Huskies were part of the Big West from 1993-95 before spending a year as an independent and returning to the MAC in 1997. NIU was also in the MAC from 1975-85. A move to the Mountain West will reunite NIU with Nevada, San Jose State and UNLV from that Big West era.
There is hope within Mountain West that NIU's location in the Central Time Zone could help the league with its next TV deal, which expires in a few years. The league's football teams played in four time zones (including Hawaii) with the Huskies in the fold. The Mountain West's current TV deal is much more lucrative than the MAC's, one reason why NIU is interested in this move. The other MWC schools also have larger budgets and investments than much of the MAC.
NIU has been arguably the best football program in the MAC over the past decade. The five MAC titles since 2010 led the league during that period. The Huskies reached the Orange Bowl in 2013 and upset Notre Dame this year, the third time in four years they have defeated a Power 4 team.
The MAC will add UMass as an all-sports member on July 1, 2025, bringing its membership to 13, at least for one year.
