Cal opens Rainbow Wahine spring invitation

Jessica Alsola won in singles and doubles on the Bears' first day of competition in 2025.
HONOLULU The California women's tennis team kicked off the new year Friday at the Aloha State, with the Golden Bears posting an 8-1 singles record on the first day of the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational at the UH Tennis Complex. The Bears also welcomed Greta Greco Lucchina to the squad, with the freshman winning in singles and doubles in her collegiate debut at Hawaii's annual tournament.
Cal didn't drop a set in his singles victories, ranking 35th as a senior Katja Wiersholm led the way in a 6-2, 6-4 result over Kimmi Hance of UCLA. Two more seniors prevailed in straight sets Jessica Alsola won 6-2, 6-3 against Ahmani Guichard of UCLA and Makenna Thiel defeated Hannah Galindo of Hawaii 6-3, 6-1 upon graduation Cami Brown defeated Mia Jovic of the Bruins 6-4, 6-3. Greco Lucchina defeated Peppi Ramstedt of Hawaii 6-4, 6-2.
Sophomore Tiziana-Marie Schomburg prevailed 6-3, 6-4 over Hawaii's Sheena Masuda, and freshmen added two more wins for Cal: Naomi Xu won 7-6(3), 7-6(3) against Makeilah Nepomuceno from Hawaii and Sophie Hernández defeated Joelle Lanz of Rainbow Wahine 6-3, 6-1. Cals Berta Passola Folk an 81st-ranked junior fell in a close match to 53rd-ranked Elise Wagle at UCLA, 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-3.
The Bears were 1-4 in doubles on Friday, with Alsola and Greco beating Lucchina Lanz and Emma Forgac 6-1.
The tournament continues Saturday, with matches starting at 4:00 PM PT.
