Jasmine Paolini suffers fifth career loss to Karolina Muchova; Italy eliminated by the Czech Republic

Jasmine Paolini suffered a fifth defeat of her career to Karolina Muchova, this time in straight sets as Italy were knocked out of the United Cup.

The world number four was completely dominated in the first leg of Italy's clash with the Czech Republic, going down 6-2 6-2 in front of a raucous crowd in Sydney.

Paolini has never been able to beat Muchova and with the Australian Open just around the corner, it could be a dangerous match for the rising star.

“It's a Muchova masterclass,” Sam Smith said on Nine's broadcast.

“Her easiest win over the Italian in straight sets. It was comprehensive and what a performance from Muchova.

“One of the best players in the world has been defeated for the fifth time in a row. When she arrives in Melbourne and sees the Australian Open draw, the first thing she will do is look for Karolina Muchova and pray that she is no longer near her is.

Muchova, who is ranked 22nd in the WTA rankings, was overcome with emotion after helping her country reach the semi-finals of the tournament.

“I really wanted to bring a point to the team, I tried to stay focused,” she said.

“Jasmine is an incredible player and it was a very tough match. I knew I had to keep going until the end, she had a lot of chances and break points.

“We played once last year and it was a long time ago. However, I am happy that I was able to win. I tried to play aggressively and that has worked well in recent games.”

The result for the Czechs was confirmed in the men's singles when Tomas Machac rolled through Flavio Cobolli in straight sets to win 6-1 6-2 in less than an hour.

“This is insanely impressive from the Czechs,” said Jim Courier in the commentary.

“They crushed Italy in singles.”

The two teams will play mixed doubles on Saturday evening, but the Czechs have an unassailable 2-0 lead after both singles matches.

The Czech Republic will now face the highly rated United States in the semi-finals, with players like Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz in the team.

In the other semi-final, Poland will face Kazakhstan on Saturday.
