Visaya men's tennis records shattered at Manoa Classic season opener
HONOLULUThe University of Hawai'i men's tennis team opened the 2025 season Friday afternoon with Day One of the Mnoa Classic at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors day was highlighted by UH's 77e-ranked Azuma Visaya No. 22 seed Jamie Connell of 10th-ranked Florida State upset in straight sets that ended in a marathon tiebreaker.
The 'Bows won one of three doubles matches to start the day. Newcomer Tianhao Hou enVisays teamed up for a 6-3 win over Seminole duo Joshua Dous-Karpensc and Jan Sebasta.
In singles, junior transfer Visaya won his first set against Connel with a break. But in the second set, the momentum swung back and forth between the two competitors. Visaya managed to beat Connel 11-9 in a hard-fought tiebreak. For Visaya, it was UH's first win of 2025, 6-4. 7-6 (9).
Newcomer, freshman Gervase Ngo nearly shutout Jan Sebesta in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, to earn his first victory as a Rainbow Warrior. Senior Carl Collins took his first set against Alex Bulte, but then fell in the second frame and ultimately came up short in the third set, super tiebreak, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6). UHs Diego Dalisay fought valiantly, but fell short by a break in both sets against FSU's Joshua Dous-Karpenshif, 6-4, 7-5.
The Mnoa Classic will take place on Saturday, January 4 at 9:00 am HT at the UH Tennis Complex. UH and Florida State will face off in a dual match on Sunday, January 5 at 8:00 am HT.
