Michigan Hockey unveils special uniforms for outdoor games against Ohio State

Now that the NHL Winter Classic between the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks is over, college hockey is taking the lead phase outdoor rink for their 'Big Ten Hockey Series'. Four matches will be played today and tomorrow in the Friendly Confines.

Today's games consist of Ohio State vs. Michigan, at 5:00 PM (ET), followed by Penn State vs. Penn State at 8:30 PM. Notre Dame, followed Saturday by the Wisconsin women's team against Ohio State at 5:30 p.m. (ET), and the UW men's team will play Michigan State at 9 p.m. (ET).

ICYMI, here are the special game uniforms for Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State and both Wisconsin teams.

Given the location, it's probably not surprising that most schools will wear those baseball-inspired uniforms. The Michigan Wolverines will Also wear a uniform with a nod to America's pastime. Specifically, the Wolverines will wear an outfit influenced by the “Chicago Cubs 80s Uniform.”

The team didn't reveal any photos, but they did create a hype video that's below. I took some screenshots there to show the details of the uniform.

__________UM wears a maize jersey, with a blue block M on the upper left chest, which resembles where the Cubs “C” logo is on their 1980s blue jersey. The collar is white, with blue trim, and the sleeves have two thin stripes, in white over blue. Breezers are solid blue, with a corn block M on the right front of the pants. Player NOB and number font are blue with white outline, trying it yourself look of the Cubs jerseys from the 80s.

The lower leg styles are what caught my attention. Although the image on TwitterX shows the team wearing corn socks with blue 'holes', the model in the video has the colors reversed. The effect, of course, is to imitate the ribbon stirrups that were the standard in the 1980s.

The rest of the uniform is quite simple. Michigan features a “Sailor Wolverine” logo on the left sleeve, while the right sleeve features a TV number.

__________As with all specialty uniforms for these outdoor games at Wrigley, I'll have to see them on the ice and in action to give a full assessment, but in theory I love this approach. Apart from Paul and Comrade Marshall, perhaps no one is more in love with the stirrup than me. But just as individual players style their stirrups, execution is critical. From what I see, the fake stirrups unfortunately look more like it “two-in-one” that plagued baseball at the time than a real stirrup. Of course, that could be intentional: if you're looking for Cubs players who played for the team back in the daythis is how the players wore their stockings. So I'm willing to give them a shot, and I love the concept (if not the execution).

As for the rest of the uniform, if emulating a pullover/sansabelt look is your thing, these UM hockey uniforms will probably work just fine. Personally, I prefer hockey jerseys to have a large emblem in the center of the jersey, so the Wolverines specialty jerseys don't quite fit that bill. But I realize that their goal was not to make a classic looking jersey, but to try to copy, as far as possible, a baseball uniform template onto a hockey uniform.

And boy, do I hate that collar. Is it just me, or does it look like a regular wool sweater worn over a white button-up shirt and a navy blue tie? Like, seriously, you get this atmosphere?

With UM in maize and Ohio State in anthracite, the game becomes color versus color. I'm not sure if the hockey rivalry between the two schools is on par with their football teams, but I'm sure it is up there.
