Hurkacz and Swiatek send Poland to the final of the United Cup

SYDNEY – Poland has entered the final of the United Cup mixed team tennis tournament for the second time in a rowGentlement Saturday with a convincing 2-0 win over Kazakhstan after Hubert Hurkacz and Iga Swaatek won their singles matches.

Last year's runners-up will face the inaugural champions the United States or the Czech Republic in Sunday's title battle. The two teams will face each other in the second semi-final in Sydney.

World number two Swiatek closed the tie with a battle against big hit Elena Rybakina for a 7-6(5) 6-4 victory at the Ken Rosewall Arena.

“I think this was the first time I was able to win against Elena on a faster surface,” said an exhausted Swiatek after the epic battle that lasted just over two hours.

“It means a lot. I didn't start well, I felt like I was on the handbrake a bit. I knew I had to do something because this match could go either way. I wanted to change the paceGentlementum and I'm glad I did that at the last possible chance.

“I told myself I wouldn't miss anymore, and I'm happy because it's always hard against Elena.”

Hubert Hurkacz previously defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-3 6-2 in less than an hour to help his team set foot in the final.

“The last match here gave me a bit of confidence and I played better every match,” said Hurkacz, who defeated Britain's Billy Harris in the quarter-finals after a pair of group stage defeats.

Poland was defeated by Germany in the final last year.

The 18-team United Cup is a preparation event for the Australian Open, which runs from January 12 to 26.
