Minnesota Hockey: Golden Gophers Open 2025 with Mercyhurst
The Minnesota Golden Gophers men's hockey team will be the only Big Ten team not to face each other at Wrigley Field over the next two days. And with the current state of the Gophers roster, that's fine. Instead of an out-of-conference game with a short roster, Minnesota will host the Mercyhurst Lakersone of the worst teams in college hockey this season for a series at 3M Arena in Mariucci.
Minnesota is coming out of their break in a great position. They are ranked third in the country and have a record of 15-3-2. They earned just one Big Ten point in their last series when they hosted State of Michiganbut again played that series with only nine attackers.
Minnesota hopes to get one or two players back from injury this weekend, otherwise they will once again have just nine forwards available for the series. Both Brodie Ziemer and Oliver Moore play with the U.S. World Junior team in Ottawa, Canada. Team USA defeated Switzerland to reach the semifinals against the Czech Republic on Friday. This means that both players will be unavailable for the entire weekend.
Minnesota can either get back center Erik Pahlsson, who has been out since November with an upper-body injury but was spotted skating earlier this week, or Mason Nevers, who was injured over Thanksgiving weekend with a neck injury and has missed action since. They are not expected to see the return of August Falloon and Cal Thomas this weekend as both suffered long-term injuries and may be out for a few more weeks.
The team that heated the ice is one of the best in the country. The Gophers have scored an NCAA-best 80 goals from 17 different players and 213 points through 21 of their 22 total skaters, and one goaltender, who have taken the ice. Minnesota's offensive depth in 2024-25 was reflected as 10 players reached double-digit scoring, the most of any college program, and the team ranks first nationally in scoring offense, with an average of 4, 0 goals per match. The team has lit the lamp five or more times in ten games and has scored fewer than three goals only four times. More importantly, the Gophers are committed on the defensive end, holding the NCAA's second-best scoring margin at plus-2.0 as they have given up 40 goals all season, an average of 2.0 goals per competition.
Mercyhurst on the other hand has not done so. The Lakers are 2-15-3 this season and haven't won a game since November 2. Senior Dustin Geregach's six goals and 15 points lead the Lakers, with Mickey Burns and Steven Agriogianis next with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Their goaltending is split between Carter McPhail and Simon Buschler, neither of whom has been good. They both allow more than three goals per game.
Minnesota is 5-0 all-time against Mercyhurst, with the most recent meetings being a two-game series to open the 2021-2022 season at 3M Arena in Mariucci.
Both games will air live this weekend on Fox9 and stream via B1G+.
