Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek battle for United Cup after Czech player abruptly leaves
Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek will battle for United Cup glory after the USA and Poland won their respective semi-finals in Sydney on Saturday in bizarre circumstances. Gauff, world number three, added: “I was intense and focused the whole match, that made the difference today.”
Big-serving Fritz, ranked fourth in the world, lost the first set on a tiebreak but fought back in the second and looked ready to take the men's singles to the next level when a hot and troublesome Machac shook hands and the Americans sent through.
“Not the way I want to win in the end, but I think we are all happy to have made it to the final,” said Fritz.
He said his opponent, who had attacked the Czech bench and squandered chances to close out the match, told him afterwards that he had a cramp.
“I didn't expect it to end so abruptly. I didn't notice that he had cramps at the time,” said Fritz.
'Perfect'
Five-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek starred for Poland in the semi-final against Kazakhstan, beating Rybakina 7-6 (7/5), 6-4.
“This win really makes me proud,” Swiatek said after giving Poland an unassailable 2-0 lead in the tie.
“It is a perfect preparation for the Australian Open,” said the world number two.
Swiatek played with the belt around her right thigh again after struggling during her tough three-set win over Britain's Katie Boulter in the quarter-finals.
That match lasted almost three hours and Swiatek slowly came out of the blocks against Rybakina, who is ranked sixth in the world.
They went to a first-set tiebreak after Rybakina saved two set points, before the 23-year-old Pole pulled away to take her country to the final.
“I definitely didn't start well and had the handbrake on a little bit. I knew I had to do something and change the momentum,” said Swiatek, making light of any injury concerns.
She relishes the prospect of meeting Gauff.
“I think she is developing every month at this stage and it will also be a nice challenge,” she said.
Hubert Hurkacz put Poland ahead when he defeated Alexander Shevchenko 6-3, 6-2 in the men's singles.
The 16th-ranked Hurkacz lost both of his singles matches in group play, but defeated Britain's Billy Harris in the quarterfinals and carried that momentum into the meeting with Shevchenko.
