Tombe Juma-Kose Thomas, former Atlantic coach, arrested in Louisville
A former football coach at several Volusia County Schools, including most recently Atlantic High School in Port Orange, was arrested in Louisville, Kentucky on December 28 after allegedly shooting at police, court records show.
Tombe Juma-Kose Thomas, 35, of Osteen, is charged with attempted murder of a police officer after he allegedly fired a shot in the direction of two Louisville Metro Police officers. He is currently being held in the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections on a $250,000 bond and will appear in court on Tuesday.
According to court records, Thomas was staying with his girlfriend at an Airbnb in the 1100 block of Reutlinger Avenue in Louisville's Germantown neighborhood when he barricaded himself in the bathroom after thinking his girlfriend had brought an unknown person into the home. Officers from the LMPD's Fourth Division were sent to assist.
When officers arrived, they reportedly knocked on the bathroom window and announced their presence, and shortly afterward, according to court records, Thomas fired a single shot through a window at or near the height of the officers' heads.
Thomas eventually left the home with the gun and was taken into custody. He told police it was a “warning shot,” records show.
The suspect is a former football coach at Atlantic High
Thomas served as the offensive coordinator at Deltona High School for three seasons from 2020-2022. Most recently, he was the head coach at Atlantic High School last fall before he and the Sharks parted ways in November.
He previously worked as an assistant coach and head coach for the Marion C. Moore School high school football team in Louisville, according to previous reporting from The Courier Journal.
Originally from South Sudan, Thomas moved to the U.S. with his family at age 9 and played football at San Diego Mesa Community College for two years before transferring to complete his collegiate career at Syracuse University as a fullback for 2010-11.
When he came to Louisville, he spent two years at Eastern High School and one year at Ballard High School before landing a job at Moore.
