My opinion | Table tennis won't be the same without three Chinese superstars
Table tennis has a special place in Chinese history and culture, from the ping-pong diplomacy of the early 1970s to the five gold medals won at last year's Paris Olympics.
The sudden withdrawal of Chinese three-star players from international rankings and tournaments therefore comes as a shock. Not surprisingly, their fans are in an uproar.
Fan Zhendong and Chen Meng, both Olympic gold medalists, announced on social media late last month that they were withdrawing from the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings. When the new list was published, it turned out that Ma Long, one of the greatest sports players ever, had also retired.
Fan and Chen revealed that their decision was driven by rules from the ITTF's commercial arm, World Table Tennis (WTT), which imposes fines on players who miss the tournaments. Rule changes for 2025 provided for $5,000 fines for top players who skip one WTT competition and play in another instead.
The WTT defended its new rules, pointing out that similar penalties have existed for years and highlighting an increase in prize money.
But it seems the withdrawal of the three Chinese superstars is too much for the sport. A reconsideration was needed and it is now underway. Last week, a meeting of the ITTF board decided to establish a task force to conduct extensive consultations with players, coaches and other members of the table tennis community and to review the regulations. A player forum will also be held this month during the Singapore Smash tournament. The WTT has supported these steps.
Such a consultation should have taken place before the new rules were announced. The controversy, which has drawn strong support for the Chinese stars not only from their fans but also from top players abroad, has damaged the sport's reputation. French star Simon Gauzy called for: REAL change.
