British tennis star furious after airline charges her 80 euros to check in rackets and then destroys them

A British tennis star has taken to social media to express her frustration after an airline told her to check in her rackets and then deliver them destroyed.
Olivia Nicholls, the No. 1 British female doubles player, had traveled to Hobart, Australia to take part in the Hobart International tournament next week.
In addition, the 30-year-old had tried to bring her three rackets onto the plane in a soft carrying bag.
On Saturday, she revealed in a post that Australian low-cost carrier Jetstar refused to take her equipment as carry-on luggage.
Instead, she had to pay $80 ($160AUD) to check in her Babolat-branded bag and rackets.
However, when Nicholls later received her belongings, she was shocked to see the bag torn to pieces and the rackets significantly damaged.

Nicholls shared photos of her seriously damaged equipment after it was returned to her
“This is unacceptable @JetstarAirways,” Nicholls wrote on X.
'160AUD to check in because I'm not allowed to take it as hand luggage, and you deliver my bag right away? How is this possible? My bag and rackets were completely destroyed.”
The tweet received more than 4,000 likes in the hours after it was posted and provoked a series of responses from fans.
One wrote: 'Wow, it's not easy to break a racket. They must have really tried their best!'
Another added: 'Oh wow. That's terrible. They get stuck in the conveyor belt and stay there for a while.
'I worked as a baggage handler, I saw that a lot. They can get tangled. But at least have the decency to say so and compensate for it.'
A third agreed: 'There's 'harsh treatment' and then there's willful negligence and destruction… Rackets don't break without a sharp impact.
“I trust that JetStar will quickly increase their value and in the meantime Babolat will support you with a number of replacements to avoid any interruption in the ability to train/compete.”
Nicholls is currently ranked 39th in women's doubles, having reached a career-high of 38 in 2024.
Together with Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova, she reached the third round of Wimbledon before being defeated by Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jelena Ostapenko.
