British tennis star makes decision to quit event after rackets destroy Down Under | Tennis | Sport
Olivia Nicholls will play at Hobart International this week despite having her rackets destroyed by budget airline Jetstar during a flight from Sydney to Tasmania. The 30-year-old is Britain's highest-ranked female doubles player and reached the Wimbledon mixed doubles semi-finals in 2023 alongside Jonny O'Mara.
Nicholls posted an image of her damaged rackets on social media after landing in Tasmania early this weekend.
And she has now received an apology from the company for failing to protect her valuables.
We have contacted Ms Nicholls to apologize and offer to refund the costs incurred and cover the damages, a Jetstar spokesperson said.
Nicholls has risen in the doubles ranks in recent seasons, reaching the third round at Wimbledon and the US Open last year.
She was a quarterfinalist in doubles at the Cincinnati Open, China Open and Wuhan Open, and also represented her country at the Billie Jean King Cup for the third year in a row.
Nicholls will play alongside Slovak Tereza Mihalikova at the Hobart International, which starts on Monday.
But her presence was questioned on Saturday after she did so X (formerly Twitter) to express her anger at the state of her rackets.
This is unacceptable @JetstarAirways, she wrote. 160AUD to check in because I'm not allowed to take it as hand luggage, and you deliver my bag right away? How is this possible? My bag and rackets were completely destroyed.
Nicholls and Mihalikova are aiming to reach the final stages in Tasmania and could even have the title in their sights.
And about her passion for doubles during an interview with the LTA website Last year Nicholls explained: I love playing in a team, and even more so when I'm representing Great Britain.
I grew up playing for my county and for the Loughborough University team, so I'm used to being part of a team – it's an environment I really thrive in and enjoy playing in.
She then described her highlights from 2024, adding: There have been so many, it's hard to pick just one. Reaching the third round of Wimbledon and the US Open this year were definitely up there. Wimbledon in particular, where I was able to support my friends and family, was very special.
Beijing was also a highlight for me as I had never played in China before. We had a good run there and the fans created a great atmosphere to play in.
