MN is preparing to organize the World Junior Hockey Championship

The 2026 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship will take place in the Twin Cities from December 26, 2025 – January 5, 2026.

ST PAUL, Minnesota Team USA is now back-to-back champions at the World Junior Hockey Championship. On Sunday they defeated Finland in extra time to secure a 4-3 victory in the championship match.

Now the puck has been passed from Ottawa to Minnesota. The State of Hockey will host the 2026 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship from December 26, 2025 to January 5, 2026.

The 10-nation tournament will see the world's best men's players under the age of 20 get a glimpse of future NHL stars.

Minnesota first hosted in 1982. Thief River Falls then co-hosted with Grand Forks in 2005. This marks the 50th anniversary of the World Juniors and is only the seventh time the U.S. has hosted the tournament.

“Hockey is woven into the cultural fabric of Minnesota like no other,” Minnesota hockey legend Lou Nanne said during a news conference Sunday in Ottawa.

KARE 11 did a brief interview with Wendy Blackshaw, president and CEO of Minnesota Sports and Events, as she boarded a plane in Canada Monday morning.

“I'm so excited, especially after being here the last five days,” Blackshaw said. “Someone made the comparison that it's like the Olympics, combined with March Madness, combined with the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, and that's basically all in one. That's basically it. It's the best hockey.”

Blackshaw estimates an economic impact of approximately $75 million for the state of Minnesota.

A total of 29 games will take place over 10 days between Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul and 3M Arena at Mariucci in Minneapolis. But a lot will also happen off the ice.

“Expect outdoor markets, snow and ice sculptures, ice skating, outdoor light festivals, world-class museums and award-winning restaurants, all against a backdrop of historic architecture along the banks of the Mississippi,” said Jaimee Lucke Hendrickson, president and CEO of Visit Saint Paul.

Blackshaw added, “We had Fan Fest all over town for gymnastics and think about that, but winterize it.”

But fans don't have to wait until next winter to celebrate. In February, the kickoff event will be the Mayor's Cup, where Pee Wee teams from Minneapolis and St. Paul will compete at TRIA Rink. Blackshaw said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter will serve as team captains.

There will be a showcase this summer with the teams coming to Minnesota to practice and play.

Blackshaw said a few weeks before the tournament that they will also travel to five cities around the state.

“There will be teams in every city playing against each other. So even people outside of the Twin Cities will be able to experience this level of hockey,” Blackshaw said.
