Michael Venus broke his six-year drought at the ASB Classic on Monday evening and joked afterwards that he teamed up with the winner of the last two doubles tournaments in Auckland to do so.
Venus and his new partner Nikola Mektic of Croatia are the No. 1 seeds this week and they started their campaign well with an impressive 6-3 6-4 win over Mexico's Santiago Gonzalez and Austria's Lucas Miedler.
Venus and Mektic got a service break in each set, while remaining solid in their own service games, to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.
The victory ended a surprisingly long run since Venus last won a match in the Classic, with the last time coming in the semi-finals in 2019, when he and Raven Klaasen defeated Bob and Mike Bryan 6-4 6-1 . Although, as Venus noted, the ASB Classic was not held in 2021 and 2022.
Can we log that a few have been canceled due to Covid! Venus laughed.
If you play at home, it is obviously a tournament that you want to do well in, because this is where friends and family are present. So it is always one where you like to do well. Unfortunately that hasn't happened in recent years, so I just went and recruited the guy who had won the last two years, and thought maybe this would give me a few more chances to win some!
Venus and Mektic started their partnership last weekend in Brisbane, where they recorded a memorable victory over Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic, and Mektic said they came together quickly.

On Tuesday evening, Marcus Daniell returns to Center Court, teaming up with James Watt for a match against Spain's Roberto Carballes Baena and Italian Luciano Darderi.
This is Daniell's final tournament and there will be a special presentation after what turns out to be his final match.
Venus has shared many special moments with Daniell over the years and paid tribute to the player with whom he won a bronze medal at the 2021 Olympic Games.
We traveled to some Futures together and stayed together, Venus said.
We won a number of future titles and won the bronze medal, which would certainly be the highlight.
I've known him for so long and it's been great to see what he's achieved.
I know he's super excited about the next chapter and that they now have a son (Rowan). Both he and Caro look so happy, so I'm just really excited for them.
