Cameron Norrie accidentally hits spectator with racket during loss in Auckland | Tennis
Britain's Cameron Norrie apologized and avoided disqualification when a racket he threw into the air hit a spectator during the ATP Tour tournament in Auckland on Tuesday.
Norrie was facing match point against Argentina's Facundo Daz Acosta when he gently tossed his racket, hitting a woman in a right-side box who was unhurt. Norrie received a warning from the chair umpire and subsequently lost 6–2, 6–3 in the first round of the tournament. In 2023 he reached the final in Auckland.
I didn't mean to do that, but it's still not ideal to do that and I've never done anything like that before, Norrie said. [The spectator] laughed and I just said, I'm sorry, that wasn't my intention. And she said, Yes, I'm totally fine.
That was no problem. But as we've seen with some other players, it's easy to default if they get caught in the wrong spot or they're not looking or something. It was not my intention to do that and it is absolutely out of character for me to do something like that. I apologized very quickly and I want to apologize in general. I'm not happy with how I behaved.
