Michigan State hockey star returns after another gold medal in record performance for USA
For the second year in a row, Michigan State hockey returned from the Christmas break without a starting goalie.
As far as excused absences go, Trey Augustine couldn't have asked for a better reason while delivering the result.
The sophomore standout for the Spartans led Team USA to its second consecutive World Junior Championship gold medal. The Americans rallied from two goals down on Sunday in Ottawa to beat Finland 4-3 in overtime and claim back-to-back gold for the first time.

I think it will definitely come into its own after our seasons here, because I am back at it again and looking forward to working with the boys here.
Going gold at Penn State is the next step for Augustine. He returned to East Lansing Monday night and the first stop was to drop off equipment at the Munn Ice Arena. Fellow goalkeepers Luca Di Pasquo and Dolan Gilbert were waiting in the car park to scare him as a welcome home. Augustine was back on the ice Tuesday morning for practice before the No. 1 Spartans (17-2-1, 8-1-1 Big Ten) hit the road to take on the Nittany Lions for a weekend series.
That tournament is so short, Augustinus said about the World Juniors. You just have less time together, so you don't know the guys that well. I think we spend so much more time together here that we fully understand what's going on. I think playing for Michigan State is almost a little more refined in that regard, but I thought the guys did a good job there just competing and working hard and that's all you can ask for.
Augustine posted a 2.52 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage while playing five of seven matches in the World Juniors. He now owns the record for wins by a Team USA goalie in the tournament with 12.

Augustine is a South Lyon native and second-round pick in the 2023 NHL draft by the Red Wings. He helped the Spartans to Big Ten regular season and tournament titles last season and returns to the lineup with an 11-2-1 record, 1.98 goals-against average and .930 save percentage.
It is unclear who will be in goal for Michigan State on Friday evening in Happy Valley. Nightingale's decision will be between his gold medalist and Di Pasquo, who went 4-0 in Augustine's absence as the Spartans won the Great Lakes Invitational and defeated Wisconsin at Wrigley Field.

Overall I'm just happy for our team, obviously we've played some big games over that period and I think they've done well from what I hear, just sticking together and fighting a bit and being there for each other .
Augustine is the man Michigan State will rely heavily on in another attempt to win a third national championship. He's only 19 years old, but his resume is getting more and more impressive.
