Aiava reached number 133 last year and has now qualified for the past two Grand Slams. The Victorian, whose mother Rosie played for the Wallaroos, believes her recent improvement in form is down to an improved mental state.

Aiava was a critically acclaimed teenager, but her career has not lived up to her own expectations. After eight years on the Tour, she has yet to cross the $1 million mark in prize money and currently has no clothing sponsor.
However, she has used the situation to her advantage and has caught the attention of tennis fashionistas for her throwback outfits. “I don't like wearing the same thing as everyone else, and I had to do that while being sponsored,” she said.
I'm hoping to get a sponsor, so I'll probably have to wear the same thing as other people, but for now I'm happy to choose what I want to wear and buy what I want. Even if you lose, it's still a fashion show when you're on the field.
Aiava has scoured Ebay and Facebook Marketplace for options, and plans to buy something blue for her first-round match against Germany's 94th ranked Greet Minnen.
The draw was less favorable for the hopes of Australian teenagers. 18-year-old Maya Joint, who won a match at the US Open last year and is currently on a massive killing spree to the semi-finals in Hobart, will play American seventh seed Jessica Pegula in the first round. 16-year-old Emerson Jones, the first Australian to be the top female junior since Jelena Dokic in 1998, meets sixth seed Elena Rybakina.

Aiava said the pair are doing great and joked that she knew better than most, having already lost to Jones. I think she will become a star very soon, Aiava said. It also motivates us older girls to see that they are so young and already so far ahead of us.
The older generation is led by veterans Daria Saville and Ajla Tomljanovic, both in their early 30s and both received wildcards as they aim to re-establish themselves in the top 100.
Tomljanovic withdrew from the Brisbane and Hobart tournaments ahead of the Open due to a knee complaint and will meet rising American Ashlyn Krueger. Saville meets 75th ranked Russian Anna Blinkova.
The top-ranked Australian is Olivia Gadecki at number 96. The 22-year-old faces former world number 9 Veronika Kudermetova. 20-year-old Talia Gibson received a wildcard and will meet Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez, who is ranked 93rd. And qualifier Kim Birrell faces a formidable first opponent in 13th seed Anna Kalinskaya.
