Cricket: Black Caps eye series whitewashed ahead of Champions Trophy

Expect no decline in the quality of cricket from the Black Caps in the third and final one-day match against Sri Lanka at Eden Park later on Saturday.

Big wins in the first two matches, by nine wickets in Wellington and 113 runs in Hamilton, secured the series against the tourists, but the dynamics of the Champions Trophy squad loom large in this third match.

Fifteen players will be selected on Sunday morning to travel to the tournament to be played next month in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates.

Batsman Rachin Ravindra appears to be a certain selection, but he insists that the focus must remain on the here and now, starting with today's win over Sri Lanka and a three-nil series win.

“No matter what cricket is on the horizon, no matter what big tournament is on the horizon, the most important thing right now is this moment, and for us that is to go to Eden Park and put on a performance for the fans,” he said.

Ravindra has been in good form in the series, with scores of 45 and 79, but the Wellingtonian is not satisfied, especially with some big matches coming up.

“There's always ways you want to get better, there's always ways you want to improve and I think if we can continue to do that as a team, that's important.”

“But it's also being true to ourselves and playing the game that we want to as Kiwis and no matter what, we know that even if it's a dead rubber or not, we'll still give 100 percent,” he said.

Middle-order player Mark Chapman has also scored well in the series, with an unbeaten 29 in Wellington and 62 off just 52 balls in Hamilton.

The versatile Chapman has batted at several positions in recent years, but in this series he was at three, the spot normally occupied by Kane Williamson, who is not playing against Sri Lanka.

Chapman has pledged that Williamson will be back straight away no matter how well he performs, and he has tried to push that thought to the background.

“Obviously Kane is probably our best ever player in history, so if you drop for him you're letting in someone who's quite useful,” he said.

“So you try not to think about it too much, you kind of look at the challenge you have in the here and now and you do the best you can in that moment.”
