Maurice Hammerton 1961-2025 – British para table tennis
British Para Table Tennis mourns the loss of board member Maurice Hammerton, who has passed away at the age of 63.
Maurice was a pillar within our sport and always generous with his time and knowledge, the spokesperson said BPTT President Adele Stach-Kevitz. His sporting wisdom and supportive nature will be greatly missed by the BPTT Board and the entire Para Table Tennis community.
Maurice was a two-time Paralympian in wheelchair basketball and competed in the 1980 and 1984 Paralympic Games. He represented Great Britain more than 150 times and went on to achieve further sporting success as a coach and board member.
Maurice was a founding member of the Milton Keynes Aces Wheelchair Basketball Club in 1984 and subsequently became a coach. He served on the board of the Great Britain Wheelchair Basketball Association (now British Wheelchair Basketball) from 1993 to 2008, where he was responsible for setting up a Coach Education Program for wheelchair basketball, and from 2001 to 2001 he was assistant coach to the GB. 2004. From 1999 to 2019 he was Development Officer for the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (Europe) and since 2015 he has been President of the Sheffield Steelers Wheelchair Basketball Club. He also worked for Sheffield City Council for 25 years.
For many years, British Para Table Tennis board members have been looking for the right person to bring their first-hand experience and knowledge of Paralympic sport, said BPTT Senior Independent Executive and Chairman of Governance Kim Laws. In the spring of 2022, Maurice Hammerton joined the board as an independent non-executive director. He immediately joined the Governance Committee and quickly became a valuable member of that committee and the board with his wealth of knowledge and understanding of life as a wheelchair athlete.
But Maurice brought so much more. He was a quiet, thoughtful participant in any discussion; he often came up with innovative solutions and his smile and sunny personality were contagious. Recently, like ours Leader in the field of environment and sustainability he helped create a sustainability policy for the board and while he fully understood the limitations of running a world-class sports program, with its reliance on international travel, he managed to embrace that and add mitigating factors where possible. Despite only being on the board for two and a half years, Maurice quickly became an invaluable director and someone who was considered a good friend by all board members. He will be greatly missed.
