Hey people! Welcome to the weekend.

This is one of my favorite sporting weekends of the year as all the major teams compete in the FA Cup, the premier knockout football (non-soccer) tournament in England and Wales. The draw isn't posted, so there are always wild matchups. For example, Liverpool will host Accrington Stanley, a team who are (I think) some 86 places below the Premier League leaders in the league system.

The FA Cup always has its share of major upsets, as lower division teams often have little to lose against more prestigious opponents and want to make a name for themselves. I can't wait to watch as much of the action as possible.

Before we get started, I've started a discussion group Connections and this column on disagreement. You can chat with me and other people about any game (and other topics). I'm always interested in discovering how other people approach the game, so join me! It's fun.

Play connections

Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. Every day you get a new puzzle at midnight. You can play on the NOW website or Games app.

You will be shown a grid of 16 words. Your job is to divide them into four groups of four by discovering the connections between them. The groups can be things like clickable items, names for study participants, or words preceded by a body part.

There is only one solution to each puzzle, and you have to be careful when it comes to words that fit into more than one category. You can play the words in any order so you might see the connections between them.

Each group has a color code. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult. The purple group often uses puns.

Select four words that you think go together and press Send. If you make a guess and you're wrong, you lose a life. When you're close to a correct group, you may see a message telling you that you're just one word away from the correct group, but you still need to figure out which one to switch.

If you make four mistakes, the game is over. Let's make sure this doesn't happen with some tips, and if you're really struggling, today's Connections answers. As in Word and other similar games, it's easy to share results with your friends on social media and group chats.

Not a perfect game today, but it feels like a game that got away. My overall streak is a maximum of seven. Here's how I fared:

The existing combinations of CONVERSE and SUPREME (clothing brands), FOOD and NETWORK (a cable channel) and TABLE and TENNIS seemed like a diversion to me.

Anyway, I was able to get the blues first. BREAKING was one of the trivia answers last night, so that was still fresh in my mind. Also a fun fact about me: I was a junior Scottish TAEKWONDO champion and reached red belt. I should get back to that at some point.

At the time I thought CONVERSE, CIRCULATE and MINGLE would go together, but I didn't clock the fourth word. NETWORK was a possibility, but I thought this would fit with GRID, MATRIX and ARRAY. That suspicion was unfounded because I was one away from a group. That meant that TABLE had to go with the other three for the yellow colors, while NETWORK was part of the green colors.

But me being me, I had to submit what I thought were the purples first. I didn't discover the connection, but I probably should have! After all, there aren't too many meanings for KANGAROO (a KANGAROO court is one that generally ignores the norms of law and justice).
