Ohio State shows courage even if the juggernaut doesn't show up
No juggernaut appeared in this College Football Playoff semifinal, just a team that showed enough grit in the fourth quarter to turn Texas back.
In a 12-team playoff where Ohio State had to win four games to claim the crown, the Buckeyes would have to win a game without their best fastball.
This was it.
To survive. Advance payment. Not all victories are for the Louvre.
Ohio State's first two playoff wins became gold stars that propelled the Buckeyes to league-leader status.
This elimination of Texas was not a golden achievement, but it did put another check in a box.
Buckeyes are riding high in Cotton Bowl fourth quarter
Quinshon Judkins put an index finger to his lips after scoring the go-ahead goal on a fourth-quarter run.
Of course it can't be that simple. Texas had one last counter-punch in it.
Aided by two pass interference penalties at Ohio State, Texas was within a yard of tying the game. Ohio State held the line on first down before Texas called a risky toss sweep on second down that the Buckeyes blew up for a seven-yard loss. After an incompletion on third down, Texas' season came down to Ewers completing the biggest pass of his career.
He never got the pass. Sawyer made sure of that.
Notre Dame should take encouragement from this evening. The Irish could be stuck with this Buckeyes team in the national championship game. However, Buckeyes fans should take solace in the fact that Ohio State produced enough key moments at the right time to outlast one of the nation's elite defenses.
Yes, this wasn't the same Ohio State team that crushed Tennessee or destroyed Oregon, but quietly, as the Buckeyes had the upper hand over an opponent that just wouldn't go away.
Doesn't matter Longhorns“Superior seeding, this is the outcome you expected if you watched the Buckeyes in the postseason, but maybe not the way you expected.
The menacing monster that emerged in the first two rounds of the CFP never showed its face here. In his place emerged a Buckeyes team that had an answer every time Texas tied the game.
Ohio State was assessed penalties for drive-killing and an interception by Will Howard.
