Florida State Football Transfer Portal Assessment: Seminoles fit the bill
Florida State Football's transfer portal class ranks as one of the best in the country, with 16 new players joining Mike Norvell's roster as he attempts to revamp the club. Seminoles.
After a 2-10 season that resulted in major personnel changes and player departures, the Seminoles have 36 new faces coming to Tallahassee through the portal and high school recruiting classes.
The high school class ranks in the top 20 of the 247Sports class rankings, with the portal class earning the top five points.
Norvell has used the portal extensively in the past, and while there have been success stories, last season's player group underperformed. The Seminoles brought in 17 signings in 2024, few of which had any meaningful impact.
Last year's class gambled on potential, which ultimately yielded no results.
This season, however, Norvell and his newly formed staff opted for more experienced and proven players. New defensive coordinator Tony White, joined by Safties coaches Evan Cooper and defensive line coach Terrance Knighton, and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, joined by offensive line coach Herb Hand, have quickly made an impact on the Seminoles' recruiting.
That's not to say a few players aren't selected based on the potential of what they could be, but more than half the class has starting experience at their previous college.
How this season's class performs remains to be seen, and that will be the deciding factor in calling this class a success. This year's lesson looks different, so let's take another look.
FSU, Mike Norvell came up big in the portal
One thing that stands out when looking at the Seminoles 2025 class is its size, with an average height of 6-foot-1.
Of the 16 transfers, 12 are 6-foot-1 or taller, with only Thomas Castellanos and Squirrel White under 6-foot-1.
Along the defensive and offensive lines, the Seminoles brought in eight recruits, with an average height of 6-foot-1. The tallest player is offensive tackle Micah Pettus, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 350 pounds.
One of the more intriguing portal pickups was Duce Robinson, the son of former FSU wide receiver Dominic Robinson. The 6-foot-1 wide receiver transferred from USC after two productive seasons at USC Trojan horsesand he brings a skill set that the Seminoles lacked last season after the departures of Johnny Wilson and Keon Coleman.
The Seminoles also brought in two big tight ends, Randy Pittman and a returning Markeston Douglas. Pittman, 6-foot-1, and Douglas, 6-foot-1, are both strong blockers and will mesh well with the offensive line.
Of the two, Pittman is the offensive threat, with 631 yards and three touchdowns in his two seasons at UCF.
Duce Robinson and Squirrel White give Thomas Castellanos dynamic options
Castellanos adds a dynamic element to the Seminoles offense with his ability to run and throw the ball. He recorded 1,113 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023, but a schedule change in 2024 made him more of a pocket passer, resulting in just 194 yards and one touchdown in eight games for Boston College.
He is a strong passer, throwing for 3,614 yards and 33 touchdowns in two seasons with the Eagles. Castellanos comes to Tallahassee and has two dynamic players in Robinson and White to throw to.
The three portal players all have a chance to make an immediate impact offensively and help transform a team that was averaging 15.4 points per game.
Robinson posted 747 yards and seven touchdowns on 39 receptions in his two seasons at USC. During his time at Tennessee, White posted 1,665 yards and six touchdowns, and his speed makes for a big downfield threat for Castellanos and the Seminoles.
