Beloved Union City football coach is battling terminal brain cancer
On September 30, 2024, Sandor Verstrepen's life changed forever. The Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School teacher and coach was diagnosed with grade four glioblastoma and given four to 14 months to live. Now the community is rallying around him and his family.
UNION CITY, California. – On September 30, 2024, Sandor Verstrepen's life changed forever.
The teacher and coach at Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School in Union City was diagnosed with grade four glioblastoma and given between four and 14 months to live.
“It was devastating, how do you wrap your head around a diagnosis like that,” said Jennifer Verstepen, Sandor's wife. “The doctor came in and flat out announced that he had multiple brain tumors.”
It was Jennifer who noticed something was wrong with her husband.
“Now that football season is starting, I don't usually see him. He's busy planning, preparing and putting together practices,” Jennifer said. “That weekend before the diagnosis, he should have done all those things, but he did nothing.”
Jennifer remembers her husband sitting around more than usual.
Sandor grew up in the Bay Area. He played football at James Logan High School before going on to play at Chabot College and then Sonoma State before finding his true passion: coaching.
“I hope they know I cared,” Sandor said.
Over the past 28 years, Sandor has coached and taught thousands of students and athletes.
But this football season was different.
Instead of drawing up plays and strategizing, Sandor was taken to different doctors, forcing him off the field while he underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
But his prospects are shockingly positive.
“What should I do? I have no control over it, I don't have to get sad,” Sandor said. “I've never been sad, I've always been positive. I'm not a sad person, I'm just not.”
Jennifer isn't sure if the placement of the tumors affects her husband's emotional response to the diagnosis.
But it puts things in perspective for both of them.
It sounds cliché, but they appreciate the little things, like emails from former students.
One wrote an email saying:
“I just wanted to let you know that you encouraged me when I was feeling down. I like you, Mr. Verstrepen. When I think of you every now and then, you put a smile on my face.
Sandor tearfully read it to KTVU as he sat at his dining room table.
On February 1, Sandor hopes to be back on the sidelines when a football camp is held in his honor at his alma mater.
“Since coaching is his passion, I would love to see kids come to this camp,” Jennifer said. “I know it's important to him. I know he is, that's who he is.”
