Activities program at Coleg Cambria Yale in Wrexham

The strategic partnership between Cambria and Table Tennis Wales has been a success, with hundreds of players taking part in community events over the past twelve months.

And there will be even more sessions for them to enjoy this year as Aaron Beech, a regional development officer for North Wales, unveiled a program of activities that will take place at the university's Yale site in Wrexham.

A recent event held at one of the locations in Coleg Cambria.

In addition to junior coaching and community sessions every Tuesday, secondary school and primary school competitions will be held in the coming weeks for children and adults of all levels.

“We also have a new partnership with Parkinson's UK Cymru and invite everyone with the condition, and volunteers and carers, to support us as we look to run sessions throughout the year,” Aaron said.

“We have been in touch with staff and apprentices at Cambria who are already helping with coaching and awareness and want to see even more people get involved in the coming months given the incredible response we have had so far.

“We create a safe space for people to play the sport while keeping fit, meet new people – the women's and girls-only 'Inspire, Play, Lead' events are an example of this – and for them to develop their own coaching and to develop skills so that they can follow these sessions themselves in the future.

Aaron revealed that as part of their 'high-performance hub' they have invested in new equipment – ​​including 12 table tennis tables – and qualified coaches have trained more than 1,500 people of all ages since the program was established in 2023.

He added: “We have had support from grassroots players and coaches and there has been a lot of goodwill towards this initiative.

“The skills and standards of the competitors continue to rise and as we predicted at the start, I am confident that North Wales will one day produce its own Olympic, World or Commonwealth champion.”
