India leads 2-0 – Cricket Ireland
RAJKOT, India – A more assured batting display from Ireland Women was not enough to avoid a series defeat to India as the home side led 2-0 in the three-match series with a 116-run win today in India.
After losing the toss and being asked to bowl first, the Irish bowlers were faced with a rampant Indian top order intent on cashing in on a good batting track.
Half-centuries with more than a run-a-ball against Smriti Mandhana, Pritika Rawal and Harleen Deol set the tone, but Jemimah Rodrigues' maiden ODI century off 90 balls surpassed her compatriots.
Ireland's bowlers toiled in the warm conditions, claiming three late consolation wickets, but India were well on top at the innings break, finishing on 370-5 from their 50 overs.
Ireland needed a positive start and lost captain Gaby Lewis early for 12, but Sarah Forbes and Christina Coulter Reilly started to steady the innings. Both batters collected their highest scores of 38 and 80 respectively, in a confidence-boosting display that showed they were coming to grips with the Indian conditions.
Coulter Reilly, in only her fourth ODI, started shakily – being hit twice in the helmet – but grew into the innings and looked the steadiest of all the Irish batsmen. Coulter Reilly scored mainly down the leg side, bringing up her first fifty off 78 balls and then looked to press on when she was joined by an energetic Laura Delany.
The pair scored 83 from just over 13 overs to push Ireland towards 200, but both batters fell in successive overs, leaving the visitors at risk of being bowled out before 50 overs.
Leah Paul (27*) and Arlene Kelly (19) added late points, and for the second game in a row the Irish side passed the highest score against India. During her innings, Paul became only the 7th Irish woman to pass 1,000 runs in ODI cricket.
The two sides will return for the third ODI at the same venue on Wednesday.
