Why the Texas football offense isn't producing results in big games in 2024

ARLINGTON The Texas Football team's defense could pull out the win Longhorns' transgression through the ear no further.

In 2024, despite a returning starting quarterback, an experienced offensive line loaded with NFL prospects and a group of skill position weapons that looked great on paper, that average dropped to 26.5 points. In eight games against eight-win Power Four teams, Texas went 5-3. The Longhorns scored fewer than 20 points in all three losses.
“Obviously we've had a lot of ups and downs this year,” running back Jaydon Blue said after the Ohio State loss. “But I think we had a lot of good guys on this offense. I think you could see us flash at times. Sometimes it didn't go our way. But I think we probably had one of the most explosive offenses we've ever had .” I've had it like that here in Texas.”
Blue is right. No offense in college football produced more plays of 20 or more yards this season than Texas' 108. The Longhorns posted six in the Cotton Bowl, compared to just two for the Buckeyes (13-2).
But overall, good teams still managed to keep Texas out of the end zone this season. The Longhorns scored touchdowns on 46% of their red zone entries against the eight Power Four teams with eight wins on their schedule. Their red zone conversion rate in all other games was 76%.

That failure was accompanied by turnover problems. Texas gave the ball away 1.75 times per game against good opposition to create a toxic losing cocktail.
These two problems came together in the game's decisive moment in the Cotton Bowl, when Texas positioned itself on the Ohio State 1-yard line and found itself trailing 21-14 with four minutes on the clock and four downs to work with.
Jerrick Gibson's first-down run up the middle went nowhere. The second down throw to Quintrevion Wisner moved the Longhorns back seven yards. Sawyer tipped Ewers' third-down pass, intended for Ryan Wingo, at the line of scrimmage and then delivered the backbreaker on fourth down by sacking Ewers, forcing a fumble and sending him running 83 yards to a place of infamy in the annals of Texas football history.
With Texas trailing 28-14, Ewers' interception on the next drive sealed the Longhorns' fate and ended their race against time to fulfill their sky-high potential. The chimes of the grandfather clock sounded victorious at the final whistle, signaling that there were no opportunities yet for the Texas attack.
