Ohio State's Ryan Day explains why a starting cornerback didn't play late against Texas
COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State football has cornerback Denzel Burke available for its meeting with Notre Dame in the national title game on Jan. 20.
The injury update came from coach Ryan Day on Sunday after Burke didn't play much of the second half of OSU's win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl.
He was dealing with an upper extremity issue that we felt was the right thing to do at that time to keep him,” Day said.
Day said the decision to remove Burke had nothing to do with his performance.
In his place, Jermaine Mathews, who was part of a three-man rotation that included Davison Igbinosun at cornerback, played 47 snaps against the Longhorns.
Mathews has awarded a champion per day.
“I think everyone feels comfortable putting Jermaine in the game based on the way he's played this year, the way he's practiced this year,” Day said.
