The NWT School Table Tennis Championships: a celebration of community and sport
Here we go! As someone who is deeply involved in various sports organizations, especially table tennis, I can't help but reflect on the incredible journey I have been on in recent months: the Arctic Winter Games in Alaska, the Canadian Table Tennis Championships in Montreal, the Summer Olympics. in Paris, the 55+ Games in Quebec City, and ending the year with the World Junior Hockey Championship in Ottawa.
But despite all these prestigious events, the highlight of my year remains the NWT School Table Tennis Championships. Real? Yes!
Having the privilege of witnessing the best players in the world, interviewing them, photographing their incredible skills and even coaching some of them is undeniably empowering. The atmosphere at national and international competitions is electric, spectators filling the stands, barriers surrounding the courts, live streaming cameras capturing every moment and the electrifying cheering that erupts only after a rally has ended. The sight of athletes collecting those little table tennis balls from five to six meters behind the table, showing off their athleticism and hand-eye coordination, is nothing short of breathtaking.
But none of that compares to the unique spirit of our little annual school championships. Here, youth from communities like Fort Good Hope come together to raise money and live stream each of their games. Teachers and volunteers help set up, make sure the tables are ready, find rackets and adjust the nets to the right height (a detail that might make table tennis purists cringe). We collect the essential table tennis balls, let's face it, rolled up socks just don't bounce the same!
A quick introduction to the basics of the rules is sufficient. Yes, we now play for 11 points per match, not 21, and serve twice instead of five. In doubles, remember to serve from the right side and make alternating hits. What if someone doesn't show up? No problem! Then find another teammate.
As someone with a background where organization comes first, I find this friendly atmosphere refreshing. It may be a different world, but it works beautifully.
The best thing about the NWT School Table Tennis Championships is the smiles on the students' faces. It's heartwarming to see them giving it their all, trying to keep the ball on the table, showing their best serves and executing powerful smashes. Spectators and teammates crowd around the table, not wanting to miss a moment, ready to jump in and celebrate every point. High-fives at rallies and cheers fill the air, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and support.
Winning a medal is fantastic, but the real joy lies in the stories shared, like that unforgettable slam from three meters behind the table, around the net and rolling to the other side. It's these moments that really matter.
Ultimately, the NWT School Table Tennis Championships are about coming together, showing up, giving your best and enjoying every second. I am incredibly proud of every participant who takes part in this celebration of sport and community. Let's continue to cherish this spirit and keep the love for the sport alive.
