Vietnamese-American tennis prodigy Learner Tien shines at Australian Open
Born in 2005 in Irvine, California, to Vietnamese parents, Tien started playing tennis at the age of five. His talent quickly attracted attention and he rose through the ranks of junior tennis in the United States. He won the junior men's doubles title at the Australian Open in 2023 and finished second at the ATP Finals Junior in 2024.
Tien's journey at this year's Australian Open was nothing short of extraordinary.
In the first round, he endured a grueling five-set match against Camilo Ugo Carabelli, securing victory with scores of 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.
In the second round, Tien pulled off a shock upset by beating fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in another nail-biting five-setter, finishing with scores of 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (8), 1-6. , 7-6 (7).
Tien continued his impressive form and faced Corentin Moutet in the third round. Despite Moutet's higher ranking – 45 places above him – Tien prevailed with an outright victory in just under three hours.
With this victory, Learner Tien advances to the fourth round, where he awaits the winner of the match between Lorenzo Sonego and Fabian Marozsn. The next challenge will take place on January 20.
