Harbhajan Singh questions the significance of domestic cricket after Karun Nair's criticism
Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has questioned the meaning of domestic cricket after the selectors did not pick Karun Nair in the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Nair was in imperious form during the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 when the Vidarbha batsman finished as the tournament's highest run scorer. He amassed 779 runs from eight innings at an astonishing average of 389.50 and a strike rate of 124.04.
Nair registered five centuries and fifty during the tournament and managed to grab the attention of the selectors with his sensational form. After his remarkable performance, several fans and pundits started demanding his inclusion in the Champions Trophy team. However, the 33-year-old failed to find a place in the 15-man team. Following his criticism, Harbhajan questioned the significance of Indian domestic cricket if the selectors are not going to pick players based on their performances there.

“Is there any point in playing domestic cricket if you don't pick players based on form and performance?,” Harbhajan wrote on his X account.
Nair made his India debut during the five-match Test series against England in 2016 and etched his name in the history books by becoming only the second Indian to score a triple century in his third Test. However, he failed to produce notable performances in his next three Tests and eventually lost his place in the team after the 2018 England tour.
Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar also revealed that the selectors had taken note of Nair's performance but said it is difficult to find a place on the team at the moment. However, he said he will remain as a back-up if anyone loses form or gets injured ahead of or during the Champions Trophy.

“I mean, those are really special performances and I mean someone who averages like 700+, 750+ or something like that, I'm sure we've had a chat when those kinds of performances happen. At the moment it is very difficult to find a place in this team. Look at the guys who were picked. All average well above 40. Unfortunately, you cannot fit everyone into a team of fifteen. But those achievements certainly make you stand out. If there is a loss of form (for a player) or injuries, there will definitely be a conversation around him,” Agarkar said at the press conference while announcing the squad.
Meanwhile, after four hundreds and an 88 in his last five innings, Nair finally failed in the final of the Vijay Hazare Trophy when he was dismissed for 27 (31). As a result, he had to see his team lose by 36 runs in the top-flight match against Karnataka, who won the trophy for the fifth time.
