Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has raised questions about the value of domestic cricket after Karun Nair was overlooked in the Indian squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. “What is the purpose of playing domestic cricket if players are not selected based on their form and performance?,” Harbhajan wrote on his X account.
Nair made his India debut during the 2016 Test series against England, where he scored a famous triple century in his third match, becoming only the second Indian to achieve such a feat. However, after a few disappointing performances in subsequent tests, he lost his place in the team after the 2018 tour of England.
Ajit Agarkar confirms that Nair will continue to be part of the discussions
Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar acknowledged Nair's impressive domestic performance but pointed out that it will be difficult to fit him into the current squad. Agarkar added that Nair would be kept on standby in case of dip in form or injuries in the run-up to or during the Champions Trophy.
“Those are exceptional performances, and when someone consistently scores around 700, 750 runs or more, it's hard not to notice it. We've definitely had discussions about it. However, at the moment it is a huge challenge to find a place in the team with the current squad. Just look at the selected players, each of them has an average of well above 40. Unfortunately, it is not possible to include everyone in a selection of 15 players. But such strong performances certainly attract attention. If there is a dip in form or an injury to a player, you can be sure that the conversation will be focused on him,” Agarkar said at the press conference announcing the squad.
