USA win in Johor – Cricket Ireland
JOHOR, Malaysia – With rain threatening early, the USA put in a dominant performance to take all three points in what was the first match completed in Group B at the ICC U19 Women's World Cup.
After winning a second toss in a row, captain Niamh MacNulty immediately opted to bat first at the Johor Academy Ground in southern Malaysia.
Overnight rain had threatened the match, but conditions had improved enough for play to start on time.
Bad weather had so far seen both of the previous two matches in Group B cancelled, adding extra importance to all the remaining matches and the points on offer.
Ireland attacked from the start, with Alice Walsh (16 of 12) leading the charge. But a slower outfield in Saturday's match against England now appeared to make it harder to find boundaries.
USA and Isani Vaghela in particular now took advantage of the circumstances to stifle Ireland's scoring opportunities, slowly increasing the pressure on the batting side.
Lara McBride (13 off 22) and Abbi Harrison (13 off 23) looked to be leading a battle with ten overs to go, but their wickets soon diminished any hopes of recovery.
Now with ball in hand, Ireland needed wickets quickly and looked close to getting their wish with a top chance in the deep from Chetna Reddy Pagydyala off the bowling Freya Sargent in the second over.
McBride made good ground and dived forward to give himself the best possible chance, but couldn't quite get under. Rebecca Lowe then similarly couldn't get half a chance in the ring against Jennifer Jackson.
McBride managed to take a wicket in her first over, but the American batters had now seized enough momentum to see out the match.
Attention quickly turns to Ireland's final Group B match against Pakistan on Wednesday.
