Huntsville sets a new record for sports tourism impact
Huntsville hosted 68 events that had an economic impact of more than $50 million.
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. As 2024 comes to a close, it marks the end of a record year for Huntsville's sports tourism team, which hosted 68 events that had more than $50 million in economic impact.
We have come a long way in recent years and 2024 has shown what sports can do in Huntsville, said Joel Lamp, sports development manager for the Huntsville/Madison County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Everyone in our sports tourism team worked hard to make such a huge impact to make this a special year and set the table for us to reach even greater heights in the future.
In total, the events brought $51,303,193 into the Huntsville economy, supported by 21 events that each had at least $1 million in economic impact. The Conference USA men's and women's basketball championships, hosted for the first time in Rocket City, led the way with an economic impact of $3.2 million.
This was an exciting year for sports in Huntsville and the impact it had on the community, said Mark Russell, executive director of the Huntsville Sports Commission. We have been fortunate to host a number of memorable events that have elevated Huntsvilles' profile while raising significant dollars for our hospitality community and we look forward to more growth in the coming year.
During the year, sports tourism generated more than 76,000 hotel room stays and generated more than $3.8 million in taxes for the city. Some highlights include:
- Hosting the U.S. National Table Tennis Championships, the first time a national governing body hosted its national championship in Huntsville. HSC and CVB were each recognized as Champions of Economic Impact by Sports destination management magazine for their efforts with the event.
- Diving into the college basketball market by hosting the Conference USA men's and women's basketball championships, and welcoming Alabama back for the Rocket City Classic with four games broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.
- Bringing the NJCAA Division II Men's and Women's Soccer Championships to the Spencer Sports Complex and Joe Davis Stadium.
- We highlight the continued growth at Ditto Landing with the Major League Fishing Toyota Series Championship.
- Running the NCAA Division II Cross Country South Regional for the first time and continuing Huntsville's streak to four consecutive years with an NCAA cross country postseason race. A streak that will continue through at least 2027, as Huntsville was selected to host the NCAA Division II regionals in 2026, Division I regionals in 2027 and Division II national championship in 2027.
- A record-breaking Huntsville Marathon that sold out with 4,000 participants.
- Creating the Rocket City Spring Shootout which brought Alabama and Tennessee women's soccer to Rocket City for a spring game.
- Welcoming the annual meeting of the Association of Chief Executives of Sport, introducing the city to a number of C-suite leaders from across the sporting spectrum.
