Michael Clarke inducted into the Cricket Australia Hall of Fame

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke has been honored by Cricket Australia as the 64th player inducted into the sports organization's Hall of Fame.

Ten years after hanging up the bat with 8,643 Test runs, Clarke was unveiled as the latest inductee on Thursday.

Two more inductees will be announced soon by Cricket Australian.

The Hall of Fame honor was one where Clarke admitted he was “very surprised.”

“It is extremely special to be sitting next to so many great players, idols and role models that I looked up to as a child, something I feel honored by,” he said at the SCG on Thursday.

“I'm very proud of it [inducted] at this location (the SCG). Growing up as a young boy, cricket was my life… and to be able to play at the SCG was a dream.

“I was lucky enough to be exposed to New South Wales and Australia.

“Now that I have a daughter and I play sports every Saturday morning and every day after school, I now understand the sacrifices (my) parents made.

“There are probably a million people I have to thank, but my family, all my teammates and everyone I played against… thank you.”

Peter King, chairman of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, hailed the success of the player “who defined his generation”.

“The selection committee was shown statistics of a player who at his peak was ranked as the best Test batsman in the world,” King said.

“More than that, Michael was an exceptional leader of our men's Test and ODI teams, having enjoyed a period of success under his captaincy.

“While often praised for his batting skills, Michael also excelled with ball in hand, having helped Australia secure victory in the 2008 Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a spell of 3-5 in 1.5 overs with only seven balls left in the match.

“Michael's career will always be fondly remembered by the Australian public and his position alongside those at the top of our game.”

After bursting onto the scene as a teenage prodigy, Clarke wore the baggy green in 115 Test matches, making 28 centuries and 27 half-centuries.

Clarke's success with the bat places him among the most decorated players of the 21st century, having won two World Cups, the Ashes and several individual honours.

At his peak, the Sydney sensation topped the world batting rankings.

In 2011, Clarke succeeded Ricky Pointing as skipper of the Test team, a position he held until his retirement from professional cricket in 2015.

Clarke has maintained a close relationship with the cricket world and works as a radio pundit.
