Syndrela wants to map her own fairy tale trip

Sura: Syndrela Das has a fixed routine. She arrives in the table tennis room for her competition, and when she is ready, she goes back to her hotel and starts studying. In less than a month she will appear before her exams of class 10. This week her attention is divided.

In the Dindayal Upadhyay Indoor Stadium Pandit in Surat, the 15-year-old Das is one of the youngest players to participate in the 86th National Championships for Seniors. But the girl from Calcutta is generally considered one of the players we should pay attention to in the coming years.

However, she has already started receiving the praise. In November she won the girls' skeleton game under the WTT Youth Contender event in Lugnano, Italy, and added a trophy to her luggage, in which her school books were already.

I wear my books wherever I go, she says to HT. While I am here, I have made many preparations for mathematics. I usually take a break when I have to come to a competition.

Das is not the longest player there is, but she is agile and quickly walking. She plays an attacking form of table tennis, where her backhand is a particularly sharp weapon.

Remarkably, she has been practicing the sport for more than 12 years. She explains that her parents drop her off at a nearby club in Kolkata to play with her girlfriend on a table.

At that time we just taped the ball against each other, she says. There is no such thing as Topspin or Backspin or any shot. I learned that later, when I was about eleven years old. We used to tap around with the ball. I didn't find it really boring because I used to play with my best friend.

By the time she was seven, she won her very first title during a mixed tournament at her club.

It used to be something I would do to spend time with my friend. But after I won that tournament, I started investing more in table tennis, she says. By the time I was 10, I started to take it more seriously and I thought this was something that I could do professionally.

Table tennis soon caught up with her earlier passion, swimming, which she had to let go because she developed a skin allergy for chlorine in the water. In her spare time, however, she does enjoy a few quick dives.

Under the custody of coaches Soumyadep Roy and Poulomi Ghatak, she trains at their academy. She won the Under-13 title at the WTT Youth Contender event in Lugnano in 2022, followed by a new title in Slovenia.

More recently, the number 45 of the junior world won silver and bronze during the youth event in Damman, Saudi Arabia in October, followed by the title-winning stay in Italy.

In Surat, Das, who previously won the national titles under 15, under 17 and under 19, participates in the Senior Nationals for the second time. However, the switch to the senior division is more intended to gain fame.

I play free because this is not my event, there is no pressure on me, she says. But the seniors are afraid because they don't want to lose from someone my age. Yet I try to learn from them how they come back from losing positions, the time they take between points, the discipline

She learns this week in Surat as much as she can do about the sport. But her time is still divided because of the upcoming exams. But she does get some help with her studies from her mother, who with her seals.

Her mother is also the one who has come up with the spelling of her name.

My aunt came up with the name, but my mother decided to change the spelling, Das adds smiling. At home they call me the house princess.

Das has a long way to go in the sport, but she hopes for a fairy -tale journey.
