Utah Hockey Club has had the “Yetis” nickname rejected by the U.S. Patent Office
The Utah Hockey Club's first season is going quite well on the ice.
The new club, built from the bones of the now shuttered Arizona Coyotes, has a record of 21-19-7 and is in no way near the top of the hockey world, but also quite far above the doldrums.
But off the ice, the club is running into a potential problem that could send them back to the drawing board. This was reported by the local NBC affiliate KSLthe United States Patent and Trademark Office earlier this month denied the club's attempt to trademark Utah Yetis due to the prominence of YETI coolers from another Yeti brand.
Although the Utah Hockey Club played under his direct name to begin as a franchise, it was common knowledge that the Utah Yeti or Yetis was the name the club ultimately worked towards.
According to the USPTO, adding Utah to the trademark was not a sufficient differentiator to distinguish the franchise.
“In the present case, the wording 'Utah' in the applied-for mark is merely descriptive or generic of the applicant's goods, the USPTO wrote in a non-final appeal, according to KSL. This wording is therefore less important in terms of affecting the commercial impression of the brand and making the text 'YETIS' the more dominant element of the brand.
Bringing Yeti to a plural, Yetis didn't cut it either.
Where does all this leave the Utah Hockey Club? Probably looking for a different name.
A Last year's fan vote identified six contenders for the future name of the franchise: Utah Blizzard, Utah Hockey Club (Utah HC), Utah Mammoth, Utah Outlaws, Utah Venom and Utah Yeti.
