ACCs College Football Tournament Before Playoff is confronted with legal problems
Let me see if I have this right, because I am a bit vague about the ACCS idea to improve the post season of the University Football.
ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips driven an idea last weekend during the most recent meeting of the Football Playoff Management Committee College, and I don't know exactly what is going on in the broad world of sport.
The idea is more games for more teams within the ACC in a nutshell. A kind of mini tournament before the play-off of the University Football even starts.
Now I am not a labor lawyer, but I really believe that adding more games for more teams will change the already uncomfortable conditions for sharing income (see: paying for playing) starting with the 2025 season.
In Layman terms you no longer add games without giving players a larger part of the media rights' entry cake. Again, I'm just a stupid writer, but that sounds a lot like a starting gun for lawyers who stand in line to take a run with more money for players.
Not that it's a bad thing.
You have to hand it over to these managers who run the sport, they try everything they can to generate income and not be seriously affected when the expected change comes on July 1 and no less than $ 20 million in wages for playing boats evaporate from their treasury.
This newest idea is the most intriguing Whopper so far. Phillips thinks that the ACC can do one of the two things prior to the start of the Play -off he 2026 season, when the new contract starts and the format to be determined has changed. Both include more games.
Report card: Football season figures college for all 134 teams
Looking ahead: Our far too early university football top 25 for 2025
The first: the regular season ACC champion gets an automatic bye for the play-off, and the following two teams have a play-in game for one of the two projected automatic berths of the ACC.
The second: the ACC has a last four species before the play -off of the University Football, where four teams will play a conference tournament (think: original CFP setup) to determine the two automatic qualifying bids projected.
Although both ideas can generate sales and therefore increase the income of the players under the current proposal for sharing income, the idea of playing more games for The Play -Off is not one that could have been provided by player representatives. In other words, someone, somewhere is a lawyers.
Let's do some maths now, shall we?
Smu, Miami, Clemson and Syracuse were the top four teams in the ACC in 2024, and in the ACC Conference Tournament scenario, Smu Syracuse would play and Miami would play Clemson. And the winner of those competitions would play a week later for the competition championship.
Assuming that the highest ranked four teams will earn the first round byes in the CFP from 2026, there is a possibility that the ACC has none of the four highest ranked teams. It would not have this season.
So that means that ACC teams play 12 regular season matches, and four ACC teams will play 13. Two more ACC teams play 14 and then the CFP starts.
So let's say that the champion of the ACC tournament does not receive a first round through in the CFP, and has to win four games to win the national title that Ohio State did this season. That means that players in the ACC Championship team should play 18 games in one season.
The NFL plays 17 regular seasonal matches, and the most team should play to win the Super Bowl is 21. NFL players also receive 49 percent of a $ 110 billion media rights turnover.
The entire college athlete pool is expected to receive around $ 20 million from 1 July, with an incremental increases of the following seasons bound by increased income if their universities are willing to spend that amount.
Phillips says that this “tournament” would start the last week of the regular season, which would mean that the planning should be flexible in the last week. I just throw this outside: Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky and Georgia will not be “flexible” playing rivalry matches against the ACC everywhere except the last week of the regular season.
So this “tournament” will have to start after a fully regular seasonal schedule of 12 games. Hence the 18-game glove for players.
Again, I am just a stupid writer, but that will be a legal problem in the near future. A big problem.
And we have all seen how the NCAA dealing with major problems: ignore them until the administrative body is called in a lawsuit. The stroke average of the ncaas in those lawsuits is, in one word, horrible.
So, to summarize: the ACC wants to add more games for more players, and then absolutely, unambiguous does not want players to be treated as employees. Does not want players a trade union, does not want them to negotiate collectively.
You must give university managers credit. They think outside the frameworks in an attempt to generate more income.
The problem is that they are trapped in a box with making and the only way out is to share more money.
