Veteran starters Pat Coogan, Rocco Spindler leave via transfer portal
South Bend Notre Dame Football Offensive Linemen Pat Coogan and Rocco Spindler have lost their starting jobs to younger players before, so they were proactive this time.
Both fourth-year players entered the transfer portal Thursday along with third-year reserve lineman Ty Chan. As with former Irish center Zeke Correll, a graduate who transferred to NC State after the 2023 season, Coogan and Spindler are leaving for a youth movement and leaving with 49 combined starts and their Notre Dame degrees.
While righty Aamil Wagner (79.5) was the clear leader in overall grade for the Irish offensive line in 2024, according to Pro Football Focus, Coogan (72.1) and Spindler (70.5) were the next two highest-ranked Notre Dame used along the way.
Both players returned to the lineup in the Game 3 win at Purdue when starting center Ashton Craig (torn ACL) and right guard Billy Schrauth (high ankle sprain) were injured. Schrauth returned to left guard six weeks later and Coogan and Spindler began the rest of the way in Notre Dame's run to the College Football Playoff title game.

At 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, Coogan is a product of Palos Heights, Illinois, who emerged as the spiritual leader of the Joe Moore Award finalists on the Irish offensive line. Coogan's Fiery and Profane Pregame Speeches went viral as Notre Dame won 13 straight games and finished 14-2.

With 23 career starts at right guard, the 6-5, 325-pound spindler is a former four-star signee from Clarkston, Mich., who played through shoulder and ankle injuries the past two seasons. He sat out the second half against Indiana in the first round, but returned to play the entirety of the final three games.
At 6-5 and 320 pounds, Chan played just six offensive snaps for Notre Dame, all in this year's Blowout win over Navy. He appeared in 12 of 16 games and played 85 snaps on special teams.
A four-star recruit from Lowell, Massachusetts, Chan was rated in the top 13 offensive tackles nationally in the 2022 signing class, but that never materialized.
Including second-year interior lineman Sam Pendleton, who started the first seven games but committed to Tennessee on Friday, three of the eight different players to start along Notre Dame's 2024 offensive line have now left.
Returning starters were Schrauth, Craig, Wagner, freshman left tackle Anthonie Knapp and sophomore tackle Charles Jagusah, who started for the injured Knapp and did well against Ohio State.
