Womens Tennis Sweeps New Mexico on Ita Kickoff Weekend – University of South Carolina Athletics
Charlottesville, va. The GameCocks dominated New Mexico with an impressive 4-0 win in the consolation match of the Ita Kickoff Weekend on Saturday evening, making their third victory of the season.
Double promotion started with a shaky start for no. 20 South Carolina, when Sarah Hamner and Lauren Friedman were surpassed, 2-6 fell and the Lobos gave an early break. Misa Malkin and Bella Bergkvist Larsson, however, responded emphatically and resulted in a 6-2 victory to make the score right. The Doubles point came to the court 2, where Olympic Lancelot and Kaitlyn Carnicella were sent before Maud Vandeputte and Sofia Taborga. The GameCocks rose ahead with a 3-0 lead before the lobos limited the opening to 3-2. Lancelot and Carnicella maintained their calmness and sealed the decisive point with a 6-3 triumph.
The GameCocks wore their momentum in Singles game and set the tone by gaining the first set victories over all six courts. Misa Malkin secured the first singles point, overwhelming Sarah Oconnor in straight sets. After a brief exchange of matches in the opening set, Malkin shifted with acceleration and took five consecutive games to win 6-1. She maintained her dominance in the second set and delivered a flawless 6-0 shutout.
Sarah Hamner and Bella Bergkvist Larsson followed the example and dismantled their opponents with identical Straight set victories, 6-1, 6-0, to conquer the game for South Carolina.
Carnicella, Helena Buchwald and Jana Stojanova all led their opponents prior to the clinch.
